Have you ever thought about how much of your home depends on the internet?
At the very least, you use the internet when you’re on a computer or tablet.
But think about how many other things use the internet.
Your mobile phone… Smart TV… video game consoles…
And there are new things all the time. Safety and security items like cameras, baby monitors, doorbells, door locks, smoke detectors, and burglar alarms.
Also comfort and convenience items like thermostats, refrigerators, and even your coffee machine.
Not to mention if you have an Alexa, Google Assistant, or another virtual assistant.
These items are designed to be helpful, but they also have inherent security risks.
Here are a few tips to keep your digital home safe and secure:
First – Secure your Wi-Fi Network. This is what connects all these devices to the internet, and cyber criminals can gain access.
If you don’t change the admin password on your router, a hacker can quickly look up the default password and log in.
In the past, when you log in to an account, say your bank account, all you had to do was enter a username and password.
With Multi-Factor authentication, in addition to a username and password, you have to prove you have access to the cell phone, email, or another app associated with you and your account.
For example… You enter your username and password. The bank will text you a code you also have to enter before getting access to your accounts.
It can seem like a pain, but better safe than sorry!
