Have you ever considered how much of your home’s functionality relies on IoT or the Internet of Things?
At the very least, you use the internet when you’re on a computer or tablet.
But consider how many other things utilize the internet.
Your mobile phone… Smart TV… video game consoles… Those are IoT.
There are always new things to discover. Safety and security items like cameras, baby monitors, doorbells, door locks, smoke detectors, and burglar alarms.
Additionally, consider comfort and convenience items like thermostats, refrigerators, and even your coffee maker.
Not to mention, if you have an Alexa, Google Assistant, or another virtual assistant.
These items are designed to be helpful, but they also have inherent security risks.
Here are a few tips to keep your digital home safe and secure:
First, Secure your Wi-Fi Network. This is what connects all these devices to the internet, and cyber criminals can gain access.
If you don’t change the admin password on your router, a hacker can quickly look up the default password and log in.
In the past, when you logged in to an account, say your bank account, all you had to do was enter a username and password.
With Multi-Factor authentication, in addition to a username and password, you have to prove you have access to the cell phone, email, or another app associated with you and your account.
For example… You enter your username and password. The bank will text you a code that you also have to enter before getting access to your accounts.
It may seem like a pain, but it’s better to be safe than sorry!
