What to Do if Your Facebook Profile is Cloned

If you ever receive a Facebook friend request from someone with whom you are already Facebook friends, DO NOT accept the invitation and DO notify your actual friend what has happened (that they have been Cloned…yes, having a clone would be great to help get your work done, do your housework or go to the grocery for you but this is a different kind of clone).

If you are ever notified of a breach or attempted breach of an account, IMMEDIATELY change your password and set up Multi-Factor Authentication if you had not done so already.

Mitigate the damage as quickly as possible by alerting your friends NOT to accept friend requests from the “fake you”.

Report the fake profile to Facebook immediately! On the fake profile, click the three dots to the right of “Message” under the profile photo, select “Report Profile”, select “Pretending to Be Someone” and indicate if it is you or someone else whom they are cloning.

You should cull through your own Facebook page to ensure you have not been duped by someone cloning one of your friends. If you see more than one page for a friend, check them both and remove any that are clearly not real…and alert the real friend. (But be careful, some people – like me – may have both a personal page and a professional page which are both legit.)
