In April, Dell Technologies suffered a three-weeklong data breach impacting 49 million customers who purchased products between 2017-2024. On May 9, Dell sent customers a data breach notification, which may be in your spam folder as you read this. Check your spam for an email titled “An important message about your Dell information.”
You won’t find this information on the Dell website unless you dive into the community forums with unanswered questions from frustrated customers. Dell’s investigation is ongoing, but details of the breach have emerged on a hacker forum from a threat actor trying to sell alleged stolen data. What’s included?
- Name
- Physical addresses
- Dell hardware and order information
Dell’s notification email says, “There is not a significant risk to our customers given the type of information involved.”
While no financial information, email addresses, or phone numbers were evidently included in this breach, it’s enough to enable hackers to develop detailed profiles of affected customers. It could lead to targeted phishing attacks.
What should you do?
- Watch for phishing attempts impersonating Dell Technologies.
- Change your passwords often.
- Update your software.
As Dell continues to investigate, they recommend notifying security@dell.com “if you notice any suspicious activity related to your Dell account or purchase.”
